Heritage



Commanster is a village located south-east of Vielsalm. Its castle, a listed monument, was built by Henri-François Baptiste, alderman at the court of Salm and mayor of Gouvy. The date of construction of 1741 appears on the lintel of the entrance door. The carved oak wainscoting of the stairway, the coat of arms and the doors are remarkable. You can taste the Cervoise de Commanster and eat there.

The ice-house is located near the N675, at the eastern exit of the village. This curious construction will allow you to imagine how 'cold' was made in the middle of the 19th century.

Beho is a village located in the South-East of Vielsalm and in the North-East of Gouvy. In the church of St. Peter in Beho you can admire the Romanesque tower, the baroque furniture of Scholtus and a wooden gallery outside the tower. The cemetery that still surrounds the small church contains some beautiful tombs from the 17th and 19th centuries.

Stavelot Abbey is a very old Benedictine monastery. Founded in 651, it was associated with that of Malmedy. From the 7th century to the French Revolution, the abbey was the seat of an ecclesiastical principality: the Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy. The abbey is now transformed and can no longer be visited.
